PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's throw away 60,000 tons of garbage - an amount that could fill nearly 25 Olympic-sized swimming pool - into the sewage treatment system each year.

Although the treatment process under Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) is designed to deal with domestic waste, mess that ended in pipes and treatment plants including discarded plastic items, diapers, sanitary napkins and condoms.

More distressingly, IWK also find dead fetus in the treatment plant, some with umbilical cord attached. There are an average of five discovery of the year.

"They are usually found in a state of decay and sometimes, without legs," the company said communications head Azzatullina Pawanchik.

IWK workers also have come across while investigating the fetus removed clogging pipes in some areas. Azzatullina said IWK usually will make a police report and assist in the investigation.

He said 20,000 cases of clogged sewer pipes were reported last year, adding that the IWK had to spend RM16mil to clean them and another RM8mil to remove tons of debris from sewage treatment plants.

"To unclog sewer pipes, we need to use high-pressure jet machine power to clear some blockage. Measure requires state of the art equipment, including CCTV and skilled workforce," said Azzatullina.

He hoped that people would play their role by not throwing foreign objects indiscriminately into the toilet.

Azzatullina said the entry of non-sewage into underground sewer pipes will restrict flow, causing sewage overflows through a manhole in the road.

"The untreated sewage to flow into the drain, creating pollution and unpleasant situation for the public," he said.

He said, clogged pipes can also create "backflows" into the toilet house.

If the waste should not be thrown through the pipe it can eventually enter the treatment plant and the chaos of the process.

Apart from the waste, other things not commonly found in sewage treatment facilities oil, grease and industrial sludge.
